Augusta Savage was an American sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She was also a teacher, and her studio was important to the careers of a generation of artists who would become nationally famous. She worked for equal rights for African Americans in the arts.
Augusta Savage fought against racism to ensure a place for African-American women in the art world. She was rejected from a French government-sponsored summer art program because she was black. This racist incident played a significant role in her life. Deeply disturbed, Savage challenged the committee and began the first of many public battles for equal rights in her life by writing a letter to the New York World.
